Separate we come, separate we go (2010) was composed for the annual Hammer and Nail collaboration between the IU composition and modern dance departments. Abigail Chylack was the choreographer for this piece.

"Ships that pass in the night, and speak to each other in passing, only a signal shown, and a distant voice in the darkness; so on the ocean of life, we pass and speak to one another, only a look and a voice, then darkness again and silence." (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow) The music for this piece is derived from the story of the Sirens. Computer generated wind and storm sounds are joined by an instrumental accompaniment that slowly builds in intensity until a distant singing is brought to the foreground through a wash of chaos.
