Aphorism (2006) is constructed around the ambiguity of sound. This piece uses convolution techniques to distort recognizable sounds into something entirely different and unique. Other times it does the opposite, revealing the identity of what at first seemed bizarre. This is true not only of the motivic development in this piece, but of the formal structure as well, with clearly definable sections emerging from one another. The samples in Aphorism were intentionally made to sound larger than real life, and this perspective contributes to the feel of ambiguity. stereo tape
